Yoga was introduced in the United States in 1893 when Swami Vivekananda first presented the concept at the World Conference on Religions in Chicago. So yoga has been practiced in the US for some time, but it only began to gain momentum and mainstream popularity in the last 50 years. This many years after yoga entered the West, it is interesting to note the various styles that are taught here. No matter what type of yoga you choose to practice, the health benefits of it are undeniable.
From a traditional yogic perspective, the practice as we see it currently taught in many places is limited to the bodily mechanics of it (the asanas). However, when we include a greater scope of the practice as it was initially intended, it is a beautiful process of shaping your system into a powerful vessel and one that is ready to receive the Divine.
So when taught in a proper atmosphere with a certain sense of humility and inclusiveness about the whole process, yoga can lead us to a healthier and more aligned lifestyle all around.
Our classes are intentionally kept small in order to pay full attention to every student in class. Our process is gentle but still challenging in that we practice with a slower pace to provide more time and awareness within each pose. We attend to each student to ensure proper alignment because when your alignment is correct, you will get the most overall health benefit from all of the poses. Depending on the posture, the longer you hold it and incorporate your breath with it, the more you will see long lasting changes in your body and your breathing.
We usually begin each class with one or two brief pranayama (yogic breathing) exercises. When students are new, we take a bit of time to ensure that they understand how to breathe within the poses to get the maximum benefit. We use foundational pranayama techniques that can be used daily at home.
We like to incorporate a routine set of yoga postures so that students can get comfortable with them. This allows you to hold them for a longer time which gives much more suppleness in your spine and upper and lower halves of your body. This longer hold also allows for a synchronization with the breath which will give you the most benefit of the pose.
We keep the room as comfortable as possible and strive to maintain a person-over-process centered environment.
